Earlier this year, I posted about JustAir, a small Michigan nonprofit with big ideas. I was excited to hear that they are making a major move this spring to test air quality throughout the Greater Detroit area. Wayne County just announced that JustAir will be launching a network of 100 air quality monitors across its communities to address pollution concerns. Additionally, 500 mobile monitor packs will be distributed to residents later in the summer.

These monitors will provide real-time, hyper-local air quality data accessible through the JustAir app or a website. They measure pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). This initiative — under a contract with Wayne County — was guided by data on poor air quality burdens and input from a community-led Air Quality Task Force.

Areas within the study have some of the highest rates of pollution-caused illness in the nation. By contracting with JustAir, Wayne County says it aims to empower its communities with information to make informed decisions and drive environmental justice. The partnership between Wayne County and JustAir Solutions reflects a commitment to addressing these air quality issues and fostering a healthier, more sustainable future.

Making sure that the next generation has healthy air to breathe is one of the best things we can do for their long term health. It’s great to see a small nonprofit get this effort rolling.
